First Holy Communion
Children in the 2nd grade are welcomed to celebrate the Sacrament of Eucharist or Holy Communion for the first time. The word Eucharist means to give thanks. The word communion means sharing. The celebration of the Eucharist is celebration of the deepest sharing - The Body and Blood of Jesus. First Communion preparation is a team effort - the home, the parish and religious education.

A common concern that most parents acknowledge is: "How do I know my child is ready for First Communion?"

Three criteria are necessary:
  • The child should know who Jesus is, some main events of His life, and the story of His death and resurrection.
  • The child should be able to distinguish between the Eucharistic Bread and ordinary bread.
  • The child should desire to receive the Eucharist.

We hold parent information sessions (February / March) to review preparing the children for receiving Jesus in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. In addition to learning about the Sacrament in school, class, or at home, the children complete online activities using our First Communion Parish Preparation Center.

Families are asked to select an available Mass during the Easter season to celebrate their child's First Communion.  Children and parents are to attend a check-in and practice session prior to their selected First Communion Mass date.

Contact Jody in the Faith Formation Office, for more information.
