Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Across the world and in many of our local parishes, young children are reflecting on Sacred Scripture, learning the rich meaning of each part of the Mass, and growing deeply in relationship with God through prayer, as they experience Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd? It is an approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an "atrium", a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is not a published curriculum.
The Holy Spirit is working in the hearts of children in the retreat-like environment of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atrium. After pondering the truths of the Catholic Faith, the children often express the joy flowing from their souls, filled with God’s grace.
What is an atrium? The atrium allows the child the space to draw closer to God. It is a place where the child can listen to the proclamations of the Good News from the Word of God; meditate on the Word of God and begin to live it according to the child’s own rhythm, and also, a place for work. It is an environment in which work becomes meditation and prayer.
The St. Bronislava level 1 atrium is a room prepared for children ages 3-6. It is filled with simple yet beautiful items to encourage spiritual development. It is a place of religious experience, community and worship. Facilitated by trained catechists, the children explore Holy Scripture and the liturgy of the Church through a sequence of presentations and accompanying materials. They are given the opportunity to prayerfully respond, to wonder, and to contemplate the works of God. The atrium is a beautiful and serene space for work and prayer that our children will look forward to every time.
